Background of the Study:
In Ika South Local Government, indigenous agricultural knowledge has sustained local farming practices for generations. These traditional methods, based on empirical observation and ecological balance, have enabled communities to cultivate crops in harmony with their environment (Edegbo, 2023). However, the introduction of modern farming techniques, including mechanization and chemical inputs, has significantly altered agricultural practices. While these modern methods aim to increase productivity, they often undermine indigenous knowledge systems and disrupt sustainable practices passed down through generations (Osuji, 2024). The tension between traditional and modern techniques raises concerns about the long-term viability of indigenous agricultural practices. This study explores the impact of modern farming on traditional agricultural knowledge, investigating whether contemporary methods complement or conflict with time-honored practices and the potential consequences for food security and cultural heritage (Ifeoma, 2025).

Statement of the Problem:
Modern farming techniques in Ika South have increasingly supplanted indigenous agricultural knowledge, leading to a decline in traditional practices. This shift may reduce biodiversity and sustainability in local farming systems. The study aims to assess the effects of these modern methods on indigenous agricultural wisdom and practices (Edegbo, 2023).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To assess the impact of modern farming techniques on indigenous agricultural knowledge.

  2. To identify challenges in integrating traditional and modern practices.

  3. To propose strategies for preserving indigenous agricultural wisdom.

Research Questions:

  1. How do modern farming techniques affect indigenous agricultural practices?

  2. What challenges arise from the adoption of modern methods in traditional farming communities?

  3. What strategies can promote the preservation of indigenous agricultural knowledge?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Modern farming techniques significantly alter indigenous agricultural practices.

  2. The adoption of modern methods negatively impacts traditional knowledge systems.

  3. Integrative farming strategies can preserve indigenous practices while enhancing productivity.

Significance of the Study:
This study is significant as it examines the balance between modern agricultural innovation and indigenous knowledge preservation. Its findings will guide policymakers in formulating strategies that sustain cultural heritage and enhance agricultural sustainability (Edegbo, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to Ika South Local Government, Delta State, focusing solely on the effects of modern farming techniques on indigenous agricultural knowledge. Limitations include reliance on self-reported data and variability in farming practices.

Definitions of Terms:

  1. Modern Farming Techniques: Contemporary agricultural practices involving mechanization and chemical inputs.

  2. Indigenous Agricultural Knowledge: Traditional farming practices and wisdom passed down through generations.

  3. Sustainability: The ability to maintain agricultural productivity and ecological balance over time.
